Outdoor Fun

Although it's HOT, summer means drinking lots of water with outdoor activities on the side in Memphis. The  2nd annual Lonnaroo was held on the Georgian Woods lawn. Per tradition, the dress code is "Sexy Casual" which I translated to "No sleeves." We didn't have quite 100% participation, but many attendees showed up without sleeves:

The last show of the season brought out friends from many parts of my life: Arkansas, MTR, and Neighborhood Church. 

SNOW DAY!!!

Teachers like snow days as much as students - 

Sledding was the best part, even though I felt it the rest of the week -

It is so wonderful to live near 22 great friends to play in the snow with!

Such a fun day!

Disgusting Creatures

I have had quite a few encounters with the world's grossest insect lately.

1. One downside to MTR housing is the cockroaches. I am known as Virginia 'Slayer' Boyd and typically come to the rescue when my roommate discovers one in our apartment. I have even been called to come over and kill cockroaches at other residents' apartments. 

2. I came across the perfect gift for my roommate:

3. One of my students asked to go to the restroom, and I don't trust him to go straight there and back so I stood in the doorway so I could watch him go down the hall and come back. When he came back in he leaned over to one of his friends to tell him something and then walk back to where he was supposed to be sitting.His friend looked on the floor and said, "Eww" then someone else said, "There's a cockroach!" That student had picked up a dead cockroach and brought it back into the classroom, so I had him clean it up and go back to the restroom to wash his hands again. It is just part of everyday life when you are with 15 year old boys all day!

The Blue End Table

I love a project. And a sister named Martha who will sand, prime, and paint with me for hours!

We learned a big lesson with this project. Don't get oil-based primer on your body. 
-
We tried to use paint thinner to clean the brushes, FAIL - that just caused the primer to get all over our hands and the fumes made us lightheaded. 
-
Forget the brushes [don't tell my dad we threw them away] we just needed to get that stuff off our hands!

Out comes the nail polish remover, but that wasn't going to cut it because all the rubbing and acetone was giving me a rash. So we asked Carolyn to google another way to get the primer off our hands. Two interesting suggestions 1. Mayo 2. Olive oil and salt. We chose #2, and it worked! Lots of laughs, but the result was much cleaner and smooth hands!

Who needs a $5 footlong when you can get a $5 end table?

I definitely got the table! I'll be back with the finished product.
